Staff Update

Recent Construction Development

Due to an issue with delivery times for the new light fixtures, we will not be able to begin construction on 9/17 as planned. This date is unfortunately in the newsletter already, so we will have to be vigilant about making sure the new date is out there once it is decided. Tentatively work will not be able to begin until around 10/8/18.

Staff In-Service Day

This Friday is our annual staff in-service day and while we will have a busy day with a lot going, there is still not enough time to cover everything that is developing currently. Included in this e-blast are status updates for several ongoing projects.

But before I jump into those updates, here is our agenda for Friday:

7:45 AM      Doors open, breakfast available
8:00             Active Threat Training led by Roselle Police Department
                          Presentation
                          Drill
12:00PM?   Active Threat Training Concludes
12:15PM     Doctor Dogs for lunch (options for omnivores and vegetarians)
Book discussion: News of the World
Construction update, more if time allows
1:00             PICs - AED, CPR training led by American Red Cross
Staff - Safety/security overview, Master Plan, more if time allows
4:00             End

As you can see: I am not certain when exactly the morning session will be completed, but lunch will be ready to eat at 12:15 PM. Be sure to arrive on time because we will jump into the morning session right away.

Drive-Up Book Return

Status: Intergovernmental Agreement for use of Village land for location of book return has unanimous support from Village Board, which is set to vote on IGA on 8/27. Library Board set to vote on 9/12.
Installation: To take place following enactment of IGA.
Funding Source: Monetary donations from Taste of Roselle Commission (2017) & Friends of the Library (2018), with in-kind support from Village of Roselle Public Works Department.
Also noteworthy: The Sister Cities Commission has pledged funds for a new tree to be planted in the cul-de-sac. If patrons are still inquiring: we, the Library, did not take down the previous tree, nor did we have any role in the decision to do so.

Policies & Procedures

At its regular August meeting the Board approved major updates to the Library's Investment and Cash Management Policy, thereby ending an almost two-year process that began on 8/17/16. The result is a more streamlined policy that better reflects how the library district's funds are currently, and have historically been, invested. To put it another way, our investment advisor described the previous policy as "more appropriate for a large city." Though this project took much longer than I anticipated: because of it, we are now working with investment advisors who specialize municipal/government investments and who have been great resources for me to turn to since I began working with them in February.

Throughout the remainder of 2018 I will be shifting focus to the rest of the policy manual and the personnel handbook. I am also bring in Better Business Planning and a local safety consultant, Vista Safety, to complete updates to our emergency manual and set in motion more staff training opportunities in the near future - this will be starting over the next few weeks.
